A Guide to Selecting the Best Oven Thermometers

How should you choose an oven thermometer?

If you bake on a regular basis, you may have noticed that temperature variations and hotspots can ruin even the most carefully prepared recipes. The problem is that most ovens fail to provide you with accurate readings. Oven thermometers can make all the difference in your cooking--provided, of course, that you choose the best oven thermometer.

Important Features

What should you consider before buying an oven thermometer?

There are different types of oven thermometers available on e-commerce sites. After going through thousands of oven thermometer reviews, we have listed some points which will help you select the right one:

  • Check the temperature range: A thermometer with a wide temperature range gives you the freedom to work on a larger selection of recipes.

  • Opt for a bright dial face: Look for an oven thermometer with a bright, colorful dial face--they are easier to read through the glass of the oven door.

  • Select instant-read thermometers: You can opt for an instant-read thermometer that can be directly slipped into the food to check its internal temperature. They are not oven-proof (that is, you can't leave it in the oven while the food is cooking); however, they can be used to test whether the food is cooked to the desired degree.

  • Check the attachment methods: The method of attaching the thermometer is an important consideration when selecting an oven thermometer. Look for a model with a sturdy base that can stand on an oven rack, or select one which clips onto the rack. The most convenient type of thermometer is the one with a hook, which allows you to hang it from the rack.

  • Fahrenheit and Celsius: If some of your cookbooks give cooking instructions in Fahrenheit temperatures, look for a thermometer with both Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales. However, a cluttered dial may be difficult to read.

  • Look for a stainless steel design: Look for a stainless steel design with a protective glass covering that is durable and easy to clean.
