We’re all familiar with the fact that humidity makes a hot day feel a lot more sweaty and uncomfortable. But humid conditions in your home are not just a source of discomfort--excess humidity can also cause a considerable amount of damage, by spawning mold and mildew. A way to ensure protecting your home and is to use a dehumidifier to remove the excess water vapor.
The most popular model of dehumidifier uses a design similar to a refrigerator: There is a compressor using a coolant that cools a metal coil, and a fan that sucks the air from the room and draws it over the cold coil. The water vapor condenses on the cold coil, much like the condensation you see on a cold glass of Coke on a hot day. This condensation collects in a reservoir. There is also a warm coil that reheats the (considerably drier) air, before sending it out of the room.

Luckily, most dehumidifiers will shut off when the reservoir fills up so that the condensed water won’t start leaking out of the appliance. But there’s an even better design: There are dehumidifiers that are supplied with a pump, that can pump the condensed water out of the reservoir, through a drainage pipe, and into a sink or out to your lawn.

We can distinguish between portable and stationary pump dehumidifiers:
Portable: This type will be on caster wheels, allowing you to transport the dehumidifier from one place to another. Just keep in mind that you’ll want the dehumidifier pump to drive the condensed water into a nearby sink or drain somewhere.
Stationary: This design will be positioned in one place in your house--probably the basement, which is the place that suffers the most from excess humidity. The collected water can be directed by a hose into a drain, sink, or out of the house entirely.
